bq51013B load transients

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ51013B, BQ24040

Excerpt from the Adaptive Communication Limit section in bq51013B datasheet:

"When the regulator is put in current limit, any load transients will be offloaded to the battery in the system. Note that this requires the battery charger IC to have input voltage regulation (weak adapter mode)."

What sort of product feature should I look for in the battery charger IC that will indicate that it offloads load transients to the battery? Or does TI have an app note that describes a recommended design to support this requirement?

  • The feature is “Dynamic Power Management”, this feature will look at input voltage and when V-in drops the system will reduce load.  For a Power Management unit with a battery it will reduce input current draw by pulling more power from the battery, see bq2425X.  For a Battery Charger it will reduce charge current to keep the input voltage above a set limit, see bq24040.
