Inquiry regarding Output Enable usage on TLC5927

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLC5927, TLC59116F

Hello, all

Now we have one inquiry regarding Output Enable usage on TLC5927 from our customer.

Please refer to the item below, and feedback us with your comment.

We would like to have PWM dimming control on TLC5927.

Please let us clarify whether we could have PWM dimming control by applying 20kHz duty cycle on Output Enable (ON) pin.

We thank you in advance for your information.

Best regards,

  • Hi Atsushi,

It would be possible to achieve PWM dimming control in this manor, but it is important to be aware of the timing parameters associated with pulsing the OE pin:

There is a 1000ns minimum pulse duration in addition to the 95ns max low to high propagation and 445ns high to low propagation.  At 20kHz, a 50us period should be plenty for the device to react, but the range of duty cycle will be limited. There are some I2C controlled devices with built in PWM control such as the TLC59116F that can use duty cycles anywhere from 0% to 99.6%.

Also, it is important to make sure OE pulse does not cause the device to enter special mode unintentionally.  This could be tricky if SPI interface is used at the same time.
