TPS2420, TPS2590 - Auto Reply and Latch off

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2590, TPS2420, TPS24750, TPS25910, TPS24751

Hello,

We'd like to ask about fault response which there are selections "Auto Reply" or "Latch off" on TPS2420 or TPS2590.

We could find out that we could choose fault response "Auto Reply" or "Latch off" with pin-/RYRT, pin-LTCH,
when the deveice occurs overcurrent fault.

<Question>
However, when devices(TPS2420, TPS2590) occur Thermal shutdown, which fault response will "Auto Reply" or "Latch off" be?
And then, do devices(TPS2420, TPS2590) have any protection except overcurrent protection and thermal shutdown?

We need your help.

Kind regards,

Hirotaka Matsumoto

  • According to the device block diagrams, the thermal shutdown has a higher priority than the setting on the RTRY or LTCH pin. For LATCH mode, either thermal or timer based fault will latch OFF the output. For RETRY mode, the output can be turned off temporarily by the timer or thermal fault. For this case and depending on the ambient conditions, the ON/OFF duty cycle can be affected by the internal temperature (and not just the CT pin duty cycle at lower temperatures).

    TPS2420 and TPS2590 have overcurrent, FET SOA (constant power) protection and thermal protection.

  • Hello Eric San,

    Thank you for your excellent explanation!
    We could understand almost things.

    However, we'd like to confirm about FET SOA protection and UV function on TPS2420 and TPS2590.

    <Question1  -  FET SOA protection>
    So, we found out that there are I(d) Detector, V(ds) Detector and Constant Power Engine on the block diagram
    on P6 the datasheet.
    Each detector monitors Id and Vds.
    If Id or Vds exceeds FET SOA protection, will constant Power Engine stop FET operation?

    That's why, FET SOA protection ensures the internal MOSFET operates within its safe operating area(SOA) at all times and all situations, right?(without permanent damage for the device)

    And then, TPS25910,TPS2421, TPS24750,TPS24751 has the same function block.
    Will they do the same action as like TPS2420, TPS2520 in case of exceeding FET SOA protection?
    If you know above, please teach us.

    <Question2  - UV protection>
    When the UV failure occurs, which will the fault response "auto-retry or latch-off" be?
    Or, is the UV failure not relative to "auto-retry or latch-off"?(The device just stops to output, right?)

    We need your help.

    Kind reagards,
