Fast Charging harms LiOn battery?

hi !

I am new to Fast Charging, i wonder if there's a myth saying Fast Charging would damage batteries? And if so, how do we avoid it and sustain life cycle of LiOn batteries?

Any FAE from TI can enlightened me on this?

  • Hello Sem,

The wear on the battery during charging will be dependent on two parameters.

    Regulation Voltage:

What is your battery regulation voltage? You can have it lower which will increase the number of charge cycles you battery will be able to support but will reduce the amount of charge stored in each cycle. This value needs to correspond with the capabilities of the battery.

    Fast Charge Current:

There is a limit to how much current can be sent into any particular battery and its capacity.

I would recommend looking at this article available on digikey that discusses battery charging and its characteristics. As long as the fast charge current is selected properly there should not be damage that should result.

Particularly right below Fig.4 it discusses peak charge current during the constant current portion of fast charging.

  • Thanks Ryan

Can TI recommends BQ solution that i can use for Fast Charging a 18650 based cell that'll add up to 10000mAh?

    Thanks!

  • Hello Sem,

The best course of action that I can recommend is you go through the parametric search feature on the TI website in the link below and see if there is anything that fits your application well looking at the characteristics of your application such as if you want a stand alone charger or host controlled also if there are other features that you would like such as power path, temp monitoring, or JEITA standard.

Will your battery be many cells in parallel or will there be any cells in series?

Let me know if there is a charger that you you come up with from the search and if you could post the search parameters it would help to narrow down the right device.
