TPS62130 damage above 17Vin?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS62130

Hi,

I'd need information on TPS62130 behavior with overvoltage cases.

17V is max operating voltage, but can the device be damaged by overvoltage burst? Since protection devices like transil start clamping @ 15V, but can reach 27V, or even worst, canthe device be damaged by short overvoltage condutions (5/50µs)?

Thx

  • I split this thread since it on an entirely different topic than your first question about the model.

While the abs max table specifies DC ratings, it is not recommended to exceed them during operation, especially the rating of the Vin pin.  Exceeding 20V for any amount of time may damage the device.

But this usually isn't an issue for most systems as the input voltage source is well defined.  i.e. a certain adapter or a specific 2-4 cell battery pack.  It is not often that a customer can apply any voltage they like to the input.  If they are able to, then your system should be designed to keep itself safe against such unknown user inputs.
