BQ24090- Temperature sensing or not?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24090, BQ24093, BQ24092

Hi,

I have incorporated the BQ24090 in to a design which is controlling the charge of a single cell Li Po battery. The TS of the BQ24090 pin is connected to the NTC of the PCM connected to the battery.

My question is does the BQ24090 have temperature sensing ability, the datasheet does not explicitly say it but I get the feeling it doesnt. Could TI confirm the situation?

Thanks,

Diarmuid

  • Hello Dairmuid,

The BQ24090 will not output a temperature value for use in other parts of the system but the input received on the TS pin is used extensively by the device.

Could you explain what your feeling about why you think the BQ24090 does not have temperature sensing?

Here are a few cases detailing how the temperature from the NTC is used.

It follows the JEITA standard which involves adjusting the charging parameters depending on the battery temperature seen on Pg. 18.

There is also an extensive figure  found on Pg. 15 of the datasheet that shows the influence the TS pin has on operation and the timing involved at different triggering thresholds.

  • Hi Ryan,

I accept your point and this is what I had originally thought was the case.

I was just rviewing the datasheet once more and just a few little things got me thinking.

The above table referencng that the bq24090 did not have JEITA, and the other table from the web page with a blank in the special features.I suppose I just wanted to confirm categorically the case.

    Thank for your response.

  • Hello Diarmuid,

You are right. I apologize for any confusion I may have created. There are JEITA compliant devices in the family and if that is a feature that you are interested in having I would recommend migrating to the BQ24092 or BQ24093.

The BQ24090 has a very basic temperature function set. The first sentence of the datasheet capture from Pg. 20 explains the on/off temperature based operation incorporated into the BQ24090.

Thank you for digging deeper to make sure you got the answer that you needed.
