TPS22966

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS22966, TPS22968, TPS22964C, TPS22963C

Customer would like to use a TPS22966 as a power distribution switch (i.e. enable on or the other path). He  wants to make sure that if the two outputs are connected together and he enables one (and disable the other) that the enabled side doesn’t back drive the disabled one. The TPS22963 (and 4) explicitly say that there is a reverse current protection, but there is nothing stated in the TPS22966 or TPS22968. Does the TPS22966 offer reverse current protection?

Thanks,

  • Hi Sevrum,

The TPS22966 does not have reverse current protection for a single channel.  The other problem with this configuration is the both outputs have a 'quick output discharge' transistor to GND that is active when the switch is disabled.  If both outputs are tied together and toggled, the output with ALWAYS have a 220ohm load to GND.

Both channels of the TPS22966 could be used in a back to back configuration to achieve reverse current protection (see Figure 36 in TPS22968 Datasheet):

The TPS22963 or TPS22964 could also be used to implement reverse current protection.  What is the maximum current requirement for the switches?

  • Hi Sevrum,

Have you been able to determine if the back to back configuration will work for this design?  Is the customer still searching for a load switch with reverse current protection?  If so, please provide the device requirements (VIN voltage, max current rating, package preference, etc.)

    Thanks,

    Adam

  • Cost is too high for a back to back configuration, two parts, TI local team is looking into alternative solutions

  • Hi Sevrum,

Thanks for the reply.  I'm glad to hear you are getting good support from our local team.  Unfortunately we do not have any 2 channel devices with reverse current protection.  To reduce the overall cost, you could use one TPS22963C or TPS22964C per channel.  These 3A load switches contain integrated reverse current protection.  What is the maximum current the load switch will need to handle?
