BQ2000 Multi-Chemistry

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ2000, BQ24616

I have a designer doing this schematic for me. I'm flexible on the chemistry's. Would like to charge Li and Ni cells. Would settle for just Li. The actual application is 6 cells in series. But I don't see any IC's that will charge 6 Li's in series. If there is, please direct me to them. So I decided to go with the BQ2000 for multiple chemistry's. Would need an array of 3 each with two cells in series. This is what the the battery configuration of the application/product allows.

My question is, the schematic in the BQ2000 datasheet is for 1 Li and 3 Ni. Can a configuration be made using the BQ2000 for 2 li and 2 Ni? Is there a tool for Battery Management IC's like the Webench for power IC's to produce a schematic, BOM, etc.?

Thanks.

  • Hello Greg,

If you are willing to narrow your chemistry to just Lithium based batteries I would recommend looking at the BQ246xx family such as the BQ24616 which can support up 6 cells in series.

This device has a sample schematic for a 3 cell application on Pg. 2 of the datasheet. There is also an EVM available that you could use for early stage testing and as a guide for your design at this link:

Addressing the question in your post in case this information is not what you were looking for.

I am not sure what you are asking when you say if it can support 2S Li-ion and 2S Ni based cells. Are you asking if using the same circuit can you charge both configurations?

There is not a WEBENCH like application for tailoring battery charger circuits unfortunately. There is usually comprehensive documentation in the form of app notes and EVM user guides along with the datasheet to help guide design the circuit properly.

Let me know what you think of the BQ24616.
