TLC59116 driving external FET for higher power ??

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLC59108, TLC59116

Hi, I want to build a disco LED bar with 16 high power LEDs 5 watts or more per LED, as a beginners Project I decided to experiment with Arduino to control a TLC59116IPWR/TLC59116FIPWR I have samples of both.  So after 2 weeks of Reading, researching and building,  I finally got them working really good with 20 something animations.and as a VU meter.

The question is, how do I control higher power LEDs, I though of using an optocoupler (isolators) or gate drivers & FETs,  but I don´t know yet ! how to connect them properly to the TLC.  I have samples of Infineons 8 channel power switches  ITS42008-SB-D profets  data sheet here as well as single channels like ITS4060S-SJ-N or ITS4200S-ME-P , I also have  NexFets and various other IRF FETS etc..

So any help with literature, schematics, etc. will be greatly apreciated, also please excuse my english, spanish is my native tongue.... :)

Thank You

Abel Martinez

  • Hi Abel,

I find your English quite good!!  Also, it looks like you want to do something similar to what Levente is showing in this post:

    http://e2e.ti.com/support/power_management/led_driver/f/192/p/334159/1166540.aspx#1166540

She was using the TLC59108 which is the 8-bit version of the TLC59116, but she has already proven the concept works.  Also, I would highly encourage you to consider TI NexFETs for this application.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

LED Driver and Load Switch Applications

  • Duhh! I forgot there's an 8 bit versión of this part in my presearch perhaps I would have saved you some time !!

Anyhow thank you for your prompt response, In manner It confirms a technique I saw for other LED drivers from competitors but I was not sure it would work, since I have limited amount of samples I make sure all of them count !! Mouser Argentina has yet to confirm availability and Price for these parts....?

Ok so I will check this out this weekend and confirm all is well or not.

PD. How/where or to who/whom I can  address a personal thanky you note for TI free sample program and support !!!

  • Abel,

No worries.  We are here to help and happy to hear our free sample program and support have been beneficial to you!!!  It is important to us that our customers are able to quickly and easily select, obtain, and design with our parts.

If you are needing a few more samples you can order them on the ti.com website, I just checked and there should be samples in stock for both 8-bit and 16-bit versions of this device:

    TLC59108 - http://www.ti.com/product/TLC59108/samplebuy

    TLC59116 - http://www.ti.com/product/TLC59116/samplebuy

Please do let me know how the testing goes and if you experience any issues.

    Best Regards,

    Adam
