TPS62160 damaged

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS62160

HELLO.i need 3.3V out ,and input must be 12V dc . I choose TPS62160,  and  the schematic is provided by TI webench design tool. but when i evaluate the module, the chip is damaged .it seems that the mosfet tube inside the chip damaged.anyone knows the possible reason?

regards

  • If the internal FET switches are damaged, the most likely cause is electrical overstress, usually over voltage on Vin or SW nodes.  If your input supply is well regulated, then it may be related to your PCB layout.  Vin overvoltage can also be caused by hot plugging.

  • Thanks John. The input supply I use is 12V switching power supply ,and there should be no probability of overvoltage . As for PCB layout, all the components packages are got from TI webench design tool. The position of each component is referred to the  datasheet.  Can you explain this aspect in detail?

  • Typically, long thin traces in dc/dc converter switching paths have too much inductance.  That parasitic inductance an lead to voltage spikes that may exceed the rating for various IC pins and cause EOS damage.
