Need clarification on TPS54560 continuous operation

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS54560, TPS40170

Hi All,

I promoted TPS54560 to customer and their requirement is i/p voltage should be upto 50VDC and o/p voltage is 42.40 volts with 5A current. There is one evaluation module available for above part, but it is rated for 5V,5A only.

SO there is bit confusion will the TPS54560 regulator works continuosly for above operation, when we calculate the o/p watts it is close to 210Watts or is there any regulator from TI which is best suited for their requirement at low cost.

Kindly need help on the above.

Regards,

Aravind

  • Hi Aravind,

The EVM can be modified to support this application but watch out for the junction temperature in the IC. Is the 5A a continuous load or a peak load current? What ambient temperatures should the IC work in in this application?

WEBENCH can typically be used to create a circuit that you can put on the EVM but I had some difficulty because it is trying to set the switching frequency too low. It is doing this in order to keep the IC Tj below 100 deg C. At these high input voltages the switching losses in the IC start becoming very high so the ambient temperature conditions become limited. I was able to trick WEBENCH to create a design if I decreased the Ta to 15 deg C.

If the temperature of the IC will be too hot for their application the alternative would be to look at a controller instead. WEBENCH has a couple suggestions to try, such as the TPS40170.

    Best Regards,
    Anthony

  • Hi Anthony sir,

Above post almost clarified my doubts. I will check with customer for few more inputs like whether it is continuous load current or peak and about the ambient temperature conditions and i will get back to you
