TPS62091 Inductor Selection

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS62091, TPS62095

Hi, we are using TPS62091 in one of our designs, PFA schematic.
I need your help to select the appropriate Inductor.

The "Inductor Selection" topic in TPS62091 datasheet does not discuss about the Inductance. Instead it speaks only about the Saturation current and DC resistance of inductor. I have used 1uH inductor as recommended in the datamanual but have no understanding about it to justify the value of inductance(why 1uH and why not 470nH)?

Kindly help me in this regard. Other details are as mentioned below:

Vout = 3.3V fixed

Iout = 3.5A

Switching frequency = 2.8MHz (default)

  • Since your 3.5A is above the 3A rating of the TPS62091, you will need to use the 4A, pin to pin TPS62095.

    Either 0.47 or 1 uH is recommended.  You should calculate the ripple current with your inductance and switching frequency to make sure that you will not hit current limit.  Then, the inductance is up to you--you trade off cost, size, efficiency, etc.
