TPS659x0: boosting VBAT

If a customer want to be able to startup a TPS659x0/OMAP35x with a voltage that is less than the minimum 3.2V threshold (but > 2.7V).  Can they simply boost only the VBAT pin to trick the device into active mode or would they need to boost at the battery terminal, VBAT domain, to guarantee proper operation?

thanks -emil

  • Hi Emil,

The correct VBAT needs to be at the battery terminal. Applying higher voltage on VBAT only will not be good for the device. All inputs on the device should ideally be supplied with the same source.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi Gandhar,

What do you mean exactly by "not good for the device"?

I thought VBAT analog input was only used for battery voltage sensing. It seems to be internally connected to a voltage comparator, and that' all.

This point is really important. Lot of us usually have 5V and 3.3V on the board.

If we can connect VBAT to 5V via a voltage divider we will not need to add a DC/DC for the TPS.

Can you also check there is no current drawn from this pin?

    Thanks.
