BQ24253 max input current

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24253

Hello,

We are busy with a design where we need a charger with current input of at least 1.8A. We saw the BQ24253 has an input current of continuous 2A to OUT from the IN pin. We need this so the system will work when only a charger is connected.

Now we did make some calculations and we saw that the systems could have a peak current of 2.2A of 2msec, in the datasheet I could not found what the peak current could be for the IN pin of the BQ24253?

Thanks in advance.

Patrick

  • Hello Patrick,

    Sorry for the delay.

The input current does have a recommended maximum of 2A but  if you look at the Absolute Max ratings on Pg. 3 the device should be able to momentarily output up to 4A assuming the input source can provide it.

With that in mind what is the input to output power budget your are working with? Input voltage & Current to the SYS voltage combined with the peak draw of 2.2A? Since the SYS pin has a peak voltage of about 4.35V the buck converter will result in a slightly higher output current over the input current dues to the voltage step down.

If you can fit the needed power on the INPUT pin while staying below the input current limit accounting for some efficiency losses then yes you should have no problem.

You could also reduce any concerns of potential strain by placing some bulk capacitance on the SYS rail near the peak load devices that create the 2.2A load pulse.
