Battery charging reverse polarity using SM74611KTTR smart diode

Hi there

I have just stumbled across this great diode and was wondering if it would be suitable at the output of a synchronous buck converter.

It would provide both reverse polarity protection in case the user connects the battery the wrong way and also reverse current leakage to stop power flowing back through the buck converter and into the solar panel. Two diodes would be placed in parallel to suit the high current requirements. This is for a commercial Maximum power point tracker.

Thank you

  • Hello Anthony,

That is an impressive diode with a very low forward voltage drop.

You could introduce this device into the charge path for removable batteries for reverse voltage protection.

The small value of the voltage drop makes the offset introduced very small. Most of the switch mode chargers measure the battery voltage at the pin of the charger so any offset will will reduce the charging voltage the cell will actually see.

One potential issue that I could see would be that some of the chargers has a battery detection algorithm that involves sinking a small amount of power to determine if the a battery is actually present or if it is just the filtering capacitors.

  • Hi Ryan

Thank you for your answer. I will grab a few and try them out.

I will place the  battery detection voltage divider at the output of the diode. This will solve the offset voltage issue and also the battery detection as the mosfet driver will be in shutdown mode until a battery is detected.

    Have a great day!

  • Hello Anthony,

I would be very interested to hear about your findings.

Let me know how the testing goes with this diode.

  • No problem. Will do
