BQ24450 as a dual step current charger

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24450, UC2906

Hello everybody. I am looking for some help, so if anyone could kindly provide some, please do so.

I am designing a Lead Acid 24V/5Ah battery charger using BQ24450. Reading the datsheet I realised I should configure the BQ24450 as a dual step charger (because I need to charge a large string of  series cells). Is that correct? In the datasheet there are alot of informations but only about dual level charger. Is there any other document containing schematic for dual step charger configuration? I would also appreciate any help concerning the component calculation for my application. Thank you in advance for any help will come in!

  • Hello,

    OLD POST: NOT CORRECT!

The dual step configuration is the dual level configuration as discussed in the datasheet.

An example of this implementation can be seen in the E2E post here:

    http://e2e.ti.com/support/power_management/battery_management/f/179/t/256288.aspx

While it is not suited for this large of a battery configuration it can provide you with additional application oriented information for this charger topology.

For help in selecting the components for this topology and device please refer to Pg 10-15 of the datasheet.

  • Hello,

After researching for another question on a similar topic I realize posted a grave error. Dual Step and Dual Level are not the same topology.

While it is a different device I would recommend looking at the UC2906 Datasheet on Pg  4 and Pg. 6 for the differences in the topology. They are similar enough that I would it could be used for a guide.
