Hi,

Can BQ27510-G3 detect a bad battery in this use case?

Single cell Li-Ion battery is operating as UPS, for backup power only.

3.65V nom., 5300mAh nom capacity, 19.3 Wh nom. energy.

The design’s new requirement:

When primary power source is on; If a defective battery is inserting,  system fuel gauge will detect and flag.

  • What do you mean by detecting a bad battery (low state-of-health, etc.)? Also, given the use of the bq27510-G3, I presume that you will be using the fuel gauge on the host side rather than being installed in the battery pack.

    In a system-side fuel gauge setup, battery capacity can't be determined instantaneously for a newly-inserted pack without some discharge activity being done. If a pack-side gauge (such as the bq27541-G1) is used, then the state-of-health and error flags like ISD (Internal Short Detected) and TDD (Tab Disconnection Detected) can be read out as soon as the battery is connected to the system.

    Yes, bad battery means that the battery is totally dead, e.g. internal short, or degraded, e.g. full capacity is lot lower (less than 75%) than the specified parameter.

    Yes, Gage is on the host side.
