I read some time ago that an external four switch buck-boost controller is the works called the LM5175. Any word on this?

Requires a current sense resistor. Don't see any options there such as inductor DCR current sensing or low side MOSFET RDSon sensing. The requirement for a physical current sense resistor is a huge ding against that part. Really dissappointed they went that route.
