preventing the LDO from burning

Hi

I have a part of my circuit that use 2.8V for this I am planing to use LP5907. the problem is that it takes the part of circuit that provides the voltage to the LDO input some time until the voltage stabilize around 3V. it can even get to 15V before stabilizing on 3V.

is there a solution that can be applied here so I wont burn the LDO?

maybe some kind of switch that closes under certain voltage or something like that?

what is the name of such component so I will look for it in the site?

  • A properly sized TVS diode should be able to clamp the input voltage from ringing above the abs. max on the device.

    A 15V peak seems really high with a 3V steady-state condition - is this operation expected with your design?

    what is the difference between this tvs diod to ESD?

    if I uses ESD and I want it to block everything above 6V then do I need to choose ESD with clamp voltage 6V is this the parameter that is important.

  • An ESD diode is designed to provide protection from a very fast transient that has a short duration, but quite a bit of energy due to its short duration.

    A TVS diode is meant to handle longer transients than an ESD diode. The below application note explains in more detail:

    An ESD diode could very easily be damaged by using it to block the ringing, and would not be advised. I would suggest first adding a large capacitance on the output of your power supply to reduce the ripple overall and smooth out the voltage. The size of the capacitance depends on the supply, but something in the uF to mF range is typically used in low to medium sized power supplies.
