Battery Fuel Gauge Requirement for BQ24650

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24650, BQ40Z50, BQ27541-G1, BQ27421-G1

Hi TI,

We are using the Battery Charger part BQ24650 in one of our upcoming proto modules. The battery pack planned is 3.7V, 2000mAh rating.

We are in need of a battery fuel gauge part that supports BQ24650 and meets any one the below mentioned optional requirements:

OPTION 1: Should have a direct graphics interface to LCD for indicating battery level.

OPTION 2: Should have an in-built microncontroller to provide user programmability options for monitoring the battery status

OPTION 3: Should be a I2C master and pass all the battery status and indications via I2C to LCD display

OPTION 4: Should have dedicated LEDs to display the battery charging level and status. These LEDs should be programmable via simple boot strap resistor options.

If you can suggest battery fuel gauge parts for each OPTION separately it would be good.

A speedy response will be appreciated.

Regards,

Deepak Holla.

  • The bq40z50 is a gas gauge that has a built-in ability to drive an LED bar-graph display (so satisfying Option 1 and 4, to some extent). The gauge requires programming and configuration as it is a SBS (Smart Battery System) gauge.

I'm not aware of any TI gauges that will do all of the tasks you need (you'll probably want to use a low-power MCU like an MSP430 to talk to the gauge and provide an LCD output, etc.), and none of them will act as a standalone I2C master to directly control an external LCD display; you'll want an external MCU to do that task.

If you're going the MCU route, you could use a cheaper fuel gauge that's tailored specifically for single-cell (1SxP) battery packs, like the bq27541-G1 or even a bq27421-G1 or bq27621 for basic battery measurements.

  • Hi Jason,

    Thanks for your reply.

Could you suggest the exact MSP340 MCU part number that is suitable for battery fuel gauge applications ?

In this case could you suggest a suitable battery fuel gauge part that supports 1 to 4 cells and has LED/LCD interface ?

    Regards,

    Deepak.
