High power system with bq chargers

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24170

I want to design a DPM-charger. My system can drain currents up to 40A and the LiPo-Pack will be charged with 4A (or more if possible). The datasheet for the bq24170/24172 has some typical application circuits with the highest DPM current being 4A. Is this only restricted by the MOSFET used (Q3 in the schematic)? Or are there other restrictions? Is it even possible with a bq-charger to drain 40A?

Regards

Nicolas

  • Hi Nicolas,

The bq24170 can charge at a maximum of 4A.  The battery discharge current doesn't go through the charge controller so it's primarily about you choice of external MOSFETs for the connection between battery and system.  You probably need to control your system so that it doesn't try to pull 40A when powered by the adapter because the system has a fixed either/or connection between the battery and the adapter.

    Thanks,

    Rachel
