Hi Team,

I have an application where I want to charge a very high capacity battery (~10-15Ah) from a ~20-V/1.5-W PV cell.

I was looking at bq24210 but noticed a forum thread saying the pre-charge safety timer might be an issue with a low charge rate on large batteries.

How would the pre-charge safety timer cause an issue with large battery packs? Is there a device that I can use instead of the bq24210?

Also, would a bq24210 charge any lithium chemistry pack? Example: LiSOCl or LiSO2

The charger would also need to be qualified for a -40 to 85 C range.

The bq24210 maximum input voltage is 7V. So, with MPP around 80%*20V = 16V, you would exceed the maximum input voltage.

The bq24650 was designed for higher voltage but also much higher power panels. Its quiescent current is in the 5mA range and so it will reduce the charge current even further.

The precharge timer will definitely be a problem. The app note below discusses how to change the precharge function.

Thanks for you quick reply. Can you also speak to the question about chemistry? Would the bq24650 charge LiSOCl and LiSO2 packs?
