TPS40200 : Iout(max) on selection table

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS40200

Dear specialist

Our customer has been considering TPS40200.
Why is selection table shown that Iout(max) is 3A ?

Customer has been thinking  Iout(max) is be able to defined Pch FET and ISNS resister.

Please let me know about the above.

~Their requirement is as bellow.~

Input : 27V(Typ
Output : 5V / 5A

Best regards.

  • Hi Alpha,

The TPS40200 could meet this requirement. The 3 A max is conservative limit based on the thermal performance when including all conditions the TPS40200 may operate in including ambient temperature and operating duty cycle.

Is the 5 A load continuous or a transient and what type of ambient temperature should this design operate in?

When trying to get the TPS40200 to work with this load current the gate charge of the high-side MOSFET needs to be checked closely. Try to select a MOSFET with similar gate charge and capacitance as used in other designs to ensure the switching losses are not too high. I recommend keeping the total gate charge <30 nC. To keep the gate charge this low they may need a higher Rdson MOSFET than they were planning to use.

Also it is important to pay attention to the forward voltage and thermal performance of the schottky diode at this high of current. Above around 3 A continuous load current a synchronous solution is often required.

    Best Regards,
    Anthony
