TPS63001 Inductor

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS63001, TPS63000EVM-148

From SLVS520B Pg.11 I selected the TDK VLF4012AT-2R2M1R5 2.2µH inductor.  However when I used the WEBENCH designer just to see whether I could save on the footprint (wearable device you see), the designer wouldn't let me choose any Inductor other than the TDK VLC6045T-3R3N which is 3.3µH and has more than double the footprint.

Also I noticed from the extremely informative post http://e2e.ti.com/support/power_management/non-isolated_dcdc/f/196/p/179400/665401.aspx#665401 that a similar/same 2.2µH inductor was heating up and using quite a bit of current with the same sort of configuration I am planning, i.e. single Lithium Ion.

Please could someone who has actually got a production PCB with a 2.2µH inductor and a TPS63001 combination be so kind as to tell me whether the 2.2µH inductor does the job or not?

Thanks in advance

  • The section "Inductor selection" on page 14/15 shows how to calculate the minimum and maximum value for a suitable inductor.

Using 2.2uH is definitely fine. The best example of a PCB in production is the Evaluation Module using this inductor.
