bq24251 temperature range

The DS for the bq2425x series specifies the recommended operating junction temperature as 0-125oC but then also gives an absolute max Tj range of -40-125oC.

Why is the recommended reduced to 0oC? If this is just the charger section then this is fine but I need to be able to draw current from the cell at temperatures down to -20oC.

I obviously accept the issues with loading Li-ion at low temperatures.

The current and voltage specs are based on the temp range from 0C to 125C.

Do you plan to use the JEITA TS profile to control the charging? If not, you can pull TS pin to LDO to disable the temperature monitor function and then you can charge the battery at -20C. The accuracy will be not guaranteed by the datasheet though.

I don't need to be able to charge the battery below 0oC. I do need to be able to discharge the battery at -40.

I want to make sure that the other functions of the device will work correctly down to -40 as is suggested by the absolute max operating range?

Yes, the IC will still work down to -40C.
