bq34z100 and SBS specifications

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ34Z100

Hello,

I'm trying to use the BQ34z100 full gauge for implementing (through a microcontroller) SBS Specification for SMBus.

The simplest question is: does exist any document for explaining how to derive all parameters listed into the SBS Specification from information available into the BQ34Z100?

If not, I've got some more detailed questions for making by myself such a "transcodification":

  • Full Charge Capacity required by SBS is referred to a C/5 discharge rate of the battery pack. Is the Full Charge Capacity value provided by the BQ34Z100 compatible to such a that requirement?
  • How is the Average Current calculate into BQ34Z100? The SBS require an average current based on last 1 minute current values
  • Average Time to Full into SBS is defined by considering the last minute average charging current; Time to Full of BQ34Z100 is based on its Average Current. How is it possible to match them?
  • SBS requires to specify a Max Error for SOC estimation. How can I know the error for BQ34Z100?

I think BQ34Z100 has be designed also considering SBS specification, so I imagine there is a sort of compatibility between them. Otherwise I have to think how to satisfy in a reasonable way the SBS specification.

Thank you very much for any answer

Matteo

  • Matteo,

The bq34z100 was not released to be SBS compatible, but it does meet the intent of the most important aspects of the spec. One clear deviation is the AA I2C bus address. SBS requires that the SMBus address be 16.

You can set the Load Select 4 to set the FCC simulations to a C/5 rate. The device offers several other Load Select options to provide more flexibility to the user for simulations.

The Average Current takes about one minute to reach the full current value.

This device does not provide the Max Error feature.
