AFE SC DSG CFG setting in BQq20Z95

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ29330

We are seeing  random battery shutdown when our battery in inserted into our system. I measured 18amps for 500us. The battery recovers in a few seconds.

The application doc states "The Cfg DsgAFE SC is programmed into the SCD register of the bq29330 AFE device. The Cfg DsgAFE SC sets the short circuit in discharging voltage threshold and the short circuit in discharging" We don't have the bq29330 AFE device. I believe the BQ20Z95 has the integrated analog front-end (AFE) short-circuit and overload protection built into the chip.

I have the AFE SC DSG CFG set to F6. 0xF Sets the short circuit delay 0x0 - 0xf = sets the short circuit in discharging delay to 915μs. The 0x6 sets the short circuit voltage threshold in discharging  to 0.25v.  0x0 - 0xf = sets the short circuit voltage threshold between 0.1V and 0.475V in 25mV steps.

My question is I should decrease the value of the short circuit voltage threshold in discharging to reduce the likehood of a false trip? Is that the correct direction?

The short circuit in discharging delay means it has to see the short condition for at least 915us. Is that correct? Do I need to decrease the time?

  • Mike,

The bq20z95 has an integrated bq29330 in the package.

Yes, Inrush current can cause short circuit protection. So setting the threshold higher should be able to handle it. Decrease the delay time would also help as you correctly understood it.
