Help for new state of health device for car's acid-lead batteries

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ34Z100-G1

Hi everybody.

I am searching for best chip to design a state of health meter for acide lead batteries in the car.

As you know, the battery in the car can't be detouched from the car's electric system, nor it should discharge a lot, since as soon as your engine is on the alternator recharges the battery.

Indeed, I want to design a device able to measure the state of health of the car battery and predict its fault in some way.

The device has to stay connected to the battery ad the rest of the electric system , nor I can disconnect the battery or espect it to discharge ( if I could discharge it a litlle with a shunt while the engine is turned off ).

I am new to this battery world, so any basic information and chip solution would be appreciated.

Regards

  • Franco,
The bq34z100-G1 will be our best option for this application and it will be released within the next few days. It uses the Impedance Track algorithm for gauging, learning and SOH reporting. IT does require some discharge to update Qmax and the Ra table to compensate for cell aging. This typically set to a 37% discharge.

  • Hi Tom, thank you very much for your fast answer.
If I understand correctly , this new chip will still require periodical discharges of the battery (to around 2/3 of its capacity).

How often do you expect this discharge cycle to be required (as per my previous email, I'm referring to batteries used in cars) to properly mantain a valid Qmax and the Ra table (and than do a correct control/monitor of a car battery)?

In my on-site car battery application, I feel it will be difficult to discharge the battery for 37%. The car won't be able to turn on the engine next day :)
  • Franco,
Periodic discharges with rest periods will be required for learning to occur. In general, we recommend that the process occur every 1 to 2 months of use. We do not currently have a gauging option that will provide learning and SOH updates without at least this much discharge.
