Wireless Charging for Headset

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25100, BQ51003, TIDA-00318, BQ500212A

Hi Everyone,

My team and I are developing wireless sport earphones and are looking into the possibility of using wireless charging methods since waterproofing and protection from environmental elements is extremely important for our product.

Can anyone suggest certain TI products for our charging circuit? We are also open to using conductive contacts/pins with over-moulding as long as it will provide some form of waterproofing.

Thanks in advance!

  • Hello Komal,

TI offers a wide variety of Wireless Charging Products. We also have system knowledge and optimized devices for wearable applications.

To better meet your system requirements I would need some more information on your charging circuit:

What  is your battery capacity and expected charging current?

Will your product need a Qi certification or will it be a custom solution?

    Best Regards,

    Markus Fleck

  • I've been through this on similar devices. While wireless charging seems like a way to avoid mechanical challenges, Your challenge with Qi charging will probably also be mechanical.  Assuming you intend to mate to an OTS Qi charger, your the TX coil you are mating to probably requires 2-3 sq" of flat, close coupling with the charging. Your device may just be too small to make that feasible.  Read the app note in coils carefully, before thinking this is an easy way to avoid a few contacts.

  • Komal,

On the Receiver side you could choose a standalone RX and combine it with a linear charger like the bq51003 (RX optimized for 2.5W) and bq25100 (linear charger for wearables).

These devices are designed for a very small solution size and small batteries which fits perfectly for wearables. See our TIDA-00318 Design: http://www.ti.com/tool/TIDA-00318?keyMatch=TIDA-00318&tisearch=Search-EN

If you consider to design your own Transmitter I recommend to take a look at the TIDA-00334 which uses the bq500212A. This would be suitable for a custom solution.
