TPS73433: regs in parallel?

Hello all:

I'm using the TPS73433 regulator in my circuit.  I'm wanting to add more load which would exceed this regulator's 250mA capacity.  Would it work to use two or more of these in parallel to increase current-handling capacity?  I know there's a 500mA version of this part, but only available in SON package -- I'm hand-soldering, so can't use it.

If using more than one in parallel would work, can they share capacitors, or would each regulator need its own set?

Perhaps this is a naive question, but I had to ask. :-)

  • Hi Mike,

There are a couple of potential options. We have a design example of how to parallel two adjustable LDOs. Another option is to use a higher current LDO. What about this family appeals to you other than the ability to hand solder?

    Very respectfully,
    Ryan
  • Hi Ryan:

Thanks for responding. I don't need adjustable; my need is only 3.3V, but if that gets me what I need, I'm not opposed. What I like about the TPS73433 are the small footprint, and low cost. It was also recommended by an engineer whose knowledge I trust. I'm not opposed to going to another family if it serves my needs. I'd like at least 500mA capacity; 1A would give a more comfortable margin.

  • Hi Mike,

Here is the TI Design that I had mentioned in my previous post:

Additionally take a look at TLV1117LV33 which is a 1-A fixed voltage device and see if it will satisfy your needs.

    Very Respectfully,

    Ryan

  • Hi again Ryan.

I've been looking at the datasheet for the TLV1117LV33, and so far it looks just about perfect for what I need.  Not sure why I never found it with my parametric searches on Digikey, Mouser, etc.  I guess nothing beats picking the brains of experienced engineers. :-)

I did also look at the dual-in-parellel design note.  The devices it uses are a bit 'overkill' (including cost) for my application.  But out of curiosity, a question:  can the presented concepts also be used with a pair of an arbitrary model LDO?  (I'm mostly a logic and software person, trying to learn more about power supplies).

    Thsnks,

    -Mike

  • Hi Mike,

    Glad TLV1117LV33 will work!

I agree the current sharing is probably overkill. The design is meant to target much higher current applications where there are fewer options on devices. Conceptually any adjustable LDO should be able to be used with some compensation adjustments.

    Very Respectfully,
    Ryan
