BQ34Z100EVSW - Where is it?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: EV2400, BQ34Z100, BQ34Z100EVM, BQ20Z80, BQSTUDIO, BQ34Z100-G1, BQEVSW

Searching the TI site for the software for the EV2300 or BQ34Z100EVL or BQ34Z100EVSW turns up NOTHING on how to order or download this sofware, which is necessary to use the EV2300.

Looking through the sluu904.pdf the user is advised:

To get the latest software archive, contact the Texas Instruments field representative assigned to work with this device.

The immediate question is, who is responsible for this task if we can't simply download it or order a CD to be shipped by snail mail?

A bigger question that should be taken as a suggestion:

Why doesn't it come with the purchase of the EVL? Why isn't there one software for all chipsets that comes with the EV2300 or EV2400?

But there is an even bigger question: who is responsible for such a policy? Really, this is the 21st century. It should not be so hard to give TI my money.

  • Joseph,

We are sorry about the problems that you have encountered? Which software are you trying to find?

  • BQ34Z100EVSW
    as stated in sluu904.pdf (aka User's Guide SLUU904–April 2012):

5 EVM Hardware and Software Setup
This section describes how to install the bq34z100EVM-001 PC software and how to connect the different components of the EVM.
    5.1 System Requirements
The bq34z100EVSW requires Windows 2000, XP, Vista, or 7.
    5.2 Software Installation
NOTE: To get the latest software archive, contact the Texas Instruments field representative assigned to work with this device.
Install the bq34z100EVSW software with the following steps:
    1. Save the archive to a temporary directory.
    2. Double-click the executable filename and follow the installer instructions to complete the bq34z100 EVSW installation.
If the EV2300 or EV2400 was not previously installed: After bq34z100 EVSW installation, a TI USB DRIVER INSTALLER pops up. Click Yes for the agreement message and follow its instructions.
    3. Plug the EV2300 or EV2400 into a USB port.
  • Joseph,

I looks like you need the bq34z100 Evaluation Software and it can be downloaded for free from either the bq34z100 product website or the bq34z100EVM product website.

    Best regards
    Tom

  • awesome. found at: www.ti.com/.../toolssoftware
    bq34z100 Evaluation Software (Rev. A) (ZIP 54775 KB ) 16 Apr 2013
  • By accident, I stumbled upon this reference to the BQEASY wizard plugin at:

    e2e.ti.com/.../128277

"What needs to be done before evaluation?
The part needs to be calibrated and configured before evaluation. Additionally, you must select a chemistry and run a learning cycle.
For newer users we recommend using bqEASY, when available, to perform the necessary pre-evaluation steps; bqEASY software is a plug-in in the device EVSW. "

    In the bqEASY guide, www.ti.com/.../sluu278.pdf
it says on page 2, Software Installation, that:

"Software installation requires that the latest EV software be installed from the TI Website in the EVM tool folder for the part being used. As an example, for the bq20z80 EVM tool folder, navigate to
    focus.ti.com/.../bq20z80evm-001.html
For the rest of this document we will use the bq20z80 EVM tool folder, but any of the EVM tool folders that support bqEASY can be used."

(Note: the link above is dead).

Following the above advice and navigating to www.ti.com/.../bq34z100evm for the bq34z100EVM, I don't find a link to a Tools folder.

I also tried to construct the url as shown in the example, to no avail, the page also does not exist:
    www.ti.com/.../bq34z100evm-001.html

Thus the first question to ask is: does the bq34z100EVSW software support bqEASY? If so, can you provide a link?

    Thank you.
  • Ah, the Tool folder is at www.ti.com/.../toolssoftware, for BQ34Z100, not bq34z100evm.
bqEASY is not listed there; does that mean it is not supported?
  • Joseph,

The bq34z100 bqEVSW does not support bqEasy. You should convert to the bq34z100-G1 device, because the bq34z100 is in the process of being moved to NRND. We have a new tool, bqStudio, that supports the bq34z100-G1. You can download bqStudio from the bqStudio product folder, but please use the "Latest Build" link near the bottom of the page. We are still in the process of placing the bq34100-G1 firmware (srec) on the web, but I can send you a copy if you can provide an email address or update your e2e biography with an email address. You can update your EVM to the bq34z100-G1 with bqStudio and the .srec file that I will send to you.

    • Start bqStudio and click through the error messages that you will receive. You will select the bq34z100-G1 v16 from the product list.
    • Go to the Programming screen and program the device with the .srec file. Reference the Section 5 of the revised bq34z100EVM User's Guide for help programming the device. The new User's Guide can be downloaded from the bq34z100EVM product folder.
    • After you have completed programming the device, restart bqStudio by selecting File >> Restart. The program should auto-detect the device and reopen bqStudio.

  • Thanks, Tom. I have updated my biography to include my email address.
Do I understand correctly that the difference between the bq34z100 and bq34z100-G1 is simply its firmware, and that the IC in my EVM can be upgraded? I wonder because I noticed on the photo for the -G1 shows the -G1 printed on the IC.
  • Joseph,

Yes, the bq34z100EVM and bq34z110EVM can be upgraded with the bq34z100-G1 firmware. The hardware did not change.
