TPS62065 - number of vias used

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS62065, TPS62085, TPS62290, TPS62230

Dear TI support,

In the TPS62065 datasheet the PCB footprint definition (page 28) is different from the PCB Layout example (page 20),

The number and the size of the GND vias on the GND PAD are totally different.

Please advise.

Thanks,

Igal

  • The number and type if vias used is very much PCB supplier driven. The 2 larger vias in the package drawing are easier to make than multiple smaller vias used in the reference layout (which were also used on the EVM). There is no specific required via arrangement, but note that a 2A device in this small of a package has a thermal aspect to the design to consider.

As well, I recommend using the newer TPS62085 to offer 3A in the same size package, while using the more flexible DCS-Control topology.
  • Thank you Chris.
Please make it clear in the datasheet to eliminate further questions.

Thank you for the proposal but our typical current load is lower than 1A and we need the Force PWM option that is missing in TPS62085.
  • Thank you for viewing the layout recommendation in the D/S. Please follow its example in your design.

The TPS62290 and TPS62230 family might also be of interest. Why do you need forced PWM mode?
