bq500210EVM not working with bq51050BEVM

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ500210, BQ51050B

The bq5050BEVM manual recommends a bq500210 primary side. I ordered both EVM's and tried to mate them but they did not work.

I discovered the following:

1. When I mate them, the bq500210EVM beeps and illuminates (solid on) the status LED D5. LED D1 on the bq5050BEVM flickers a few times and goes out.

2. When I mate a bq51013EVM with the bq500210EVM, the status LED blinks and I get 5V out on the bq51013EVM.

3. bq500210 is WPC v1.0 and the bq5050B is WPC v1.1 - Is this a problem?

4. Should the bq500210EVM and bq51050BEVM be talking to each other and transferring power?

Thank you

  • Naji,

The bq51050B is a wireless power receiver plus battery charger.  If the BAT pin is not loaded with a battery or battery emulator, the bq51050B will interpret that as a fully charged battery.  It will sent a charge complete signal to the TX and turn off.  The TX will continue to check to see if the bq51050B needs to charge.  The frequency depends on the TX.  In general, I use a source meter for a battery emulator.

  • Hi Dick,

Thank you for the quick response.
So, there is no incompatibility due to WPC 1.0 vs. WPC 1.1?

Once I get a battery it should work?
  • Naji,

That is correct. A WPC v1.1 RX will work on a WPC v1.0 TX without issue. FOD is the main delta between the two WPC versions.

Adding a battery (or emulator) to your system will enable the bq51050B to enter charge properly. Figure 3 in the bq51050BEVM764 User Guide shows how to create a simple emulator with some power resistors, a diode and a power supply.
