Batterie charge for battery Nimh, series configuration, 6 cells (7.2V/2800mah)

Good morning.

We need to charge a NiMH battery, series configuration, 6 cells (7.2Vdc /2800 mah), there is no individual connection of batteries (battery terminals are inaccessible), there is no physical protection for reverse polarity of batteries.

Range input voltage (12Vcc..28Vcc). We want a integrated switch-mode battery charge controller to charge a battery at 0.6Amp/h. We have the following Problem: the batteries may have low voltage (ie less than 0.5Vcc, because a NiMh battery fully charged is discharged in a few months without resistance). In this case, will require a preload to revive the battery, In addition, they can put the batteries in the housing with reverse polarity.

Some questions;

In the process to revive the battery if a battery has reverse polarity, can break the battery?

Besides temperature protection any standard protection for this?.

Which controller of Texas Instruments for battery charge can we use?

thank you very much
