bq24292i with fuel gauge

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24292I, BQ27421-G1

Hello. I have doubts about how to combine bq24292i and a fuel gauge. These are my questions:

1.- I want to use bq24292i, but I need to add a fuel gauge to my system. The problem is that the NTC resistor of the lithium battery could not be shared by the charger and the fuel gauge (for example bq27421-G1). One option is that the host controller of my system tells the fuel gauge if the battery is present or not, but I want to know if there is a way to combine bq24292i with any fuel gauge so there is no need for my system host to tell the fuel gauge that battery is present or not. I want to add the NTC to the charger for thermal protection of the battery and the fuel gauge should detect if the battery is present or not autonomously.

2.- If there is no way to do this, ¿could the system host monitors the temperature on the NTC and disable/enable the charge on the battery charger? If I use this solution, any NTC will be attached to the bq24292i and I do not know if it is a problem?

                                       Thank you in advance.

  • 1. Have you looked into bq27531? It can directly work with bq2429x charger. Also bq27421 has internal temp sensor that can measure the IC temperature. If it is placed close to the battery, the temperature is reasonable to be used as battery temperature.

    2. Host can control the CE pin to enable and disable charger. However, NTC connect to charger is recommended. Gauge can always get the temp info from host or from internal temp sensor with reasonable temperature accuracy if it is placed close to the battery.
