Charger Survey

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24115, BQ24133, BQ24172, BQ24715, BQ24780S

Hi Team,

We summary the main requirement for the charger we need:

  1. 2-cell battery – charge voltage 8.2V and 8.4V. (Adjustable is better, second tier is as least have pin-to-pin series IC that could support different charge voltage)
  2. High efficiency for the 0.2A-1A loading
  3. Control interface – we plan to have 2 different charger currents (0.2A and 0.8A). For BQ24xxx series, it need to control by additional FET and resistor (cost and design complicate). It’s better to control the charge voltage/current by SW setting.

Currently, we found BQ24115 have adjust voltage (FB pin, need additional resistor) and acceptable efficiency, but it need hardware setting for ISET1/2, FB for charge current/voltage.

Do we have any candidate that could fit all the requirements?

Many thanks,

Prescott

  • Prescott,

As you say the bq24115 would work, but the newer version similar to that part is the bq24133 (8.4V/cell) which will still need the external FET and resistor to change the charge current, but is cheaper so may offset the cost for external components.  The pin-to-pin compatible part bq24172 will also provide adjustable charge voltage to cover both 8.2V and 8.4V  applications.

As for software controlled, there are a number of options but typically they require more external components than the standalone options I've recommended.  Without knowing more about your system requirements, the first two I would suggest looking at would be the bq24715 and the bq24780S.
