TPS43060 no current limiting action

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS43060

Has anyone had any experience with the OCP on the TPS43060?  I have a design that according to the Excel configuration REV B and Webench should begin to limit at 3.5A of output current.  It does not, as a matter of fact, the output current will not limit even when the load is drawing in excess of 5A.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

  • Hi Sean,

A couple things which may be going on here. First in a boost converter the current limiting is more of an input current limit than an output current limit. When the input current limit is hit the output voltage will start dropping and you may see the output current still go up. However the input current is being limited. This type of behavior is just the nature of the boost topology. Extra current sensing is needed to have true output current limit.

Second if the output current is large enough such that the output voltage is a diode drop below the input voltage a normal boost will no longer be able to limit the current. The current just passes directly through the path from input through the inductor and MOSFET body diode to the output. Some of our boost converters and controllers have features to add protection for this scenario.

Hope this helps explain what you're seeing.

    Best Regards,
    Anthony
