BQ20z45 Calibration

I am currently using the BQ20Z45DBT-R1 IC for management of a 4-cell battery pack.  As we near production of the product this is on, I am going over what will be necessary for test and calibration of the Gas Guage iC circuitry.  My main question is whether or not calibration of the IC using the BQMTester (or custom test hardware and software) is required for accurate operation.  If the calibration process is not performed, what kind of board to board variance should I expect?

    The bqMTester can be used to calibrate the bq20z45. You can use the averaged method where you calibrate about 20 packs and then use the average of their calibration coefficients in production. You will lose some accuracy due to external components, but it should only be a few percentage points of gauging accuracy.

    What will happen if you deploy a battery pack using bq20z45-R1 without performing calibration? Will it still work properly? How far off will the accuracy be? Thanks - Mohan

    By calibration I assume you refer to calibrating the voltage and current measurements.  It is ideal to calibrate each board individually but at a minimum it would be recommended to manually calibrate around 20-30 boards and then use the average of those calibration values in the golden file that you program into every IC.


    Note that you MUST develop a golden file based on your battery profile and system configuration that you flash into every pack.  If this is what you mean by calibration then you cannot skip it.

    Yes that is what I mean by calibration.  I would like to know how the pack would behave if you do program the golden file, but forget to do the voltage and current calibration.  What would be the consequence?
