TPS2032D Overcurrent mode

Hi,

I am trying to simulate the overcurrent condition on TPS 2032D in a USB circuity and expecting it trip around 1.5A as listed in datasheet but it actually tripped around 2.16A.

The part could not turn on (behave correctly) when we drain the current at  >1.5A before the Vin being supplied.

That means the part could not turn off when there is a fault happen in operating mode.

Test setup:

At Power On condition, use Sorensen DC Electronic Load SLM-60-30-150 to drain the current.
Electronic Load Mode: Constant Current
Drain current: 2.1A
Vin : 5V

Observation:
OC#: Remain high (3.3V)
Vout: Voltage drop to 4.5V

Is the part out of spec or it is a normal behaviour?

Thanks

  • Can you furnish the o-scope waveforms of the test? Please show current (between C454 and pins 2/3 or out of pins 6/7/8), voltage at INSx pins, voltage at OUTDx pins and voltage at OC#.

Additionally, electronic loads can complicate the measurement and in some cases damage the DUT. There will be two active loops interacting with each other with erratic results. Using a resistive load should yield the expected test results.

  • The scopeshot shows the OC# and OUT stable even 2.1A being drawn. Using resistive load yield the same result.

The part act correctly when there >1.5A current being drawn during DUT being turn on and that is great.

But once the output voltage stable (5V), TPS2032D would not trip when there is a shortcircuit current (>1.5A) drained. This will be an issue if some parts could not withstand this big amount of current and will cause thermal event.
