3.7Vin to 5Vout at 500mA boost converter recommendation.

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS61046, TPS61256, TPS61252

What is the best boost converter to recommend with the following specs and cost then size being a concern?

Vin: 3.7V

Vout: 5V

Iout: 500mA

Size and cost are the main drivers.

Current suggestion was TPS61046

  • TPS61256 will offer a smaller solution, since the switching frequency is three times faster.  I ran a webench simulation and the solution size is 43 mm^2.  The 1 ku price of the TPS61256 is just a little higher than the TPS61046.

  • hi Josh
TPS61046 is primarily designed for VOUT=9 or higher and smaller output current condition. it is not good option for this sierra's application.

    I also suggest TPS61256.

    thanks

  • For the TPS61256YFFR 5V boost regulator, I need to know if this part will always start up when loaded.
There are some parts that do not boost above Vin when the current is loaded. This becomes a concern because even the output caps can load the regulator and prevent the boost from working. Can you please verify that the output will boost to 5V under load when Vin is ramped slow and quickly. If this part doesn’t work then please recommend another part.
  • The current limit at pre-charge stage is approx. 200mA, so the answer to your question is no. and you can use TPS61252 if you requirement higher pre-charge current.

however, large output capacitor can't prevent the device from start-up, because the VOUT will always ramp up to almost VIN , then the device start to switching.
