TPS62273 error

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS62273, TPS2115

Hello,

we have a solution with the TPS62273 converter. This solution was produced over some years, without any problems. Last week we got two devices with high current consumption.

The system is usb powered with battery (li-ion), so the input voltage of the TPS62273 is 5V or direct battery (switched via powermux tps2115).

The system current typically is about 150 mA, but on this two devices the current is over 300 mA, but the system works correct with 3,3V (Vsel  = High). If the system is disconnected the 150 mA current are still there.

After replacing the TPS62273 the system works with the correct current, so that no other errors are detected.

This mean the damaged tps consumes 150 mA extra current? Can somebody explain in that situation this failure can appear?

  • Yes, it sounds like the IC is damaged. You can confirm this by putting the failing IC on an EVM and seeing if the current draw is still present.

Typical causes of damage are hot-plugging the input voltage wherein it rings past the rating of the IC and non-ideal PCB layout.
