LM3414 circuit missing catch diode D1

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM3414

I forgot to add the catch diode, D1 in the reference schematics in the datasheet.  The boards are built and ready to go, for an urgent application.  It appears D1 clamps the LX pin at the VIN power supply, eliminating any switching spikes, is this correct?

Will the LM3414 be damaged/destroyed without the D1 diode installed?

  • D1 is not there to eliminate switching spikes, it is a critial part of the power path. When the internal switch is on it will charge the inductor, when it turns off D1 provides a path for the energy to discharge into the LED load. Without this diode the energy will unload on the internal switch, likely causing an over-voltage event until the switch avalanches and is likely destroyed. Do not operate the circuit without D1 or it will most likely be damaged very quickly.
