bq24192 getting hot while charging

We are using the bq24192. During charging (VBUS = 12V) Icharge = 3-4A the IC gets really hot.

I can measure ~ 0.5V between VBUS and PMID, I think this voltage should be lower! If I try to charge with VBUS=6V the voltage drop is ~0.06V what seems better corresponding to the data-sheet (R_RBFEETmax = 40mR).

Is this measured voltage between VBUS and PMID normal?

From which voltage source is the Q1 Gate control powered?

Hi Marco,

60mV is about correct, you should not see 0.5V across PMID and VBUS. Actually, with the same load, when VBUS is higher, current flows into Q1 should be smaller, you should expect to see lower voltage drop, not higher.

Can you check this on other board? I assume you measured the voltage at charger pin, not your connector.

thanks for your answer.

It seems we had some layout issues on our last design. The new board has much better GND connections between the input and output C and now the bq seems to work as it is defined in the data sheet.

Hallo Phien Nguyen,

on my project it was an layout issue (the new datasheet include some layout hints you can give to your layout engineer ;-) -a good layout is always a basis to start.

I read your post, but I have no special idea, perhaps you can try the demo board BQ24192IEVM-021 and if this works you can switch to your design.
