BQ40Z60 ACFET Toggling

I'm using the BQ40Z60EVM with a 4S pack. I changed the required settings for 4s operation, programmed the appropriate chemistry, and am now doing a manual learning cycle. With FETs under manual control, I fully discharged the pack until CUV and then turned off our load, waiting for the pack to rest. During the discharge, I noticed that the ACEFT would often be off, and would sporadically turn on and register the appropriate AC Adapter voltage. I'd say it was off (such that ACLW was high) about 98% of the discharge duration. The cell has now rested, so I want to charge it, but I'm still experiencing sporadic ACFET enabling. ACFET will be high for a few minutes then go low for a few minutes, interrupting the charge. BMS Studio keeps polling successfully during this time, and I can always measure the DC voltage on the input pins manually during this time. I'm trying to figure out why ACFET seemingly randomly toggles without my control to interrupt charge, even under seemingly nominal temperature and current. Thanks.

  • The ACFET should not cycle on and off, so it is probably a setup problem. Please forward a gg.csv file and I will check it.

    I loaded your gg.csv file and do not see the ACFET dropout. Does the FET run completely off? The pack charged as it should.

  • The behavior that was a bit unsettling to me was toggling of the AC FET during discharge, during the start of the charge cycle, and at the end of the charge cycle. Even now, I'm going through a subsequent discharge and the "AC Adapter Voltage" is 0 because ACFET is off. Once in a while it toggles on and I get a correct voltage reading. Same thing happened at the start and end of my charging cycle. During the middle 75% of the charging cycle it was high the whole time, which led me to believe it might have been expected behavior. Is there any more information I can provide to help you troubleshoot this problem? Thanks.
  • Trying a different EVM seems to have made the ACFET issue go away... Perhaps I just got a problematic board.

    I discharged the battery and waited for REST to be asserted. Max error was updated to 3% as expected. I then underwent a charge cycle, but the battery was only charged to 16.4V instead of  16.8V. All of my FC, overvoltage, etc. behaviors are set around 4.2V/cell, so I don't know why it would stop at 4.1V/cell. I could not find any flag asserted that would cause charging termination. The charger did taper off the current quite slowly, and ended up right at 16.4V, so I'm hoping it's just a configuration issue. The only suspicious thing I noticed was that I set my design capacity to 6.6Ah, and by around 16.4V the charger estimated that it had put that much charge in the battery. I'm assuming this wouldn't actually cause an issue though.

    I've attached a gg.csv file I took right after the charge and am hoping you can help me figure out why it stopped at 16.4V. Thanks

    The gg file does not indicate as to why the Ra table did not update. Do you have the log file that you can share?

  • I'm not surprised the Ra table did not update, as the pack did not reach any voltage I expect for charge termination. I set the appropriate flags to 4.2V/cell and the charger only charged the battery to 4.1V/cell. This has happened every time I've tried to charge the pack and I'm wanting to know what else I need to change in order to charge the pack to full capacity. Thanks
