Hi,

Both internal and external passive cell balancing options are fully supported by the bq76920, while external cell balancing is recommended for bq76930 and bq76940.

So what care should be taken to address FET heat?

    Q1: Yes, When using Internal drivers upto 50mA can be balanced per cell(bq76920). For the bq76930 and bq76940 the input filter resistors must be large due to the device architecture, so internal balance current is limited in these family members.
    Q2: Internal FET needs to be enabled by CELLBALx registers. When Disabled, Internal FETs are not used.
    Q3: This should be ok, however, will confirm about 3mA value.
