Cin of TPS650830

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS650830

Hi,

TPS650830 DS shows that Cin of DCDC controller is recommended to 12uF.

But in the TPS650830_app_ckt.pdf,  2*10uF of Cin is applied to each DCDC controllers.

Is it possible to use 10uF of Cin for each DCDC?

  • HI Junghwa,

Remember that the capacitance of ceramic caps actually derates with DC voltage that is applied to them. So, basically, the 12uF is capacitance and the 2 x 10uF is the capacitors. Once the VIN voltage is applied they will drop to 6uF each and thus, meeting the 12uF minimum capacitance need.

This being said with lower current demands than what we designed for sky lake application needs the Cin can be reduced and possibly 1 x 10uF could be used. For example if a rail that was designed for 6.5A is using only 2A the Cin might be be able to be reduced.
