Multiple TLC5971 LED Driver in parallel

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLC5971

Hi, I have an existing design which utilizes all 12 separate channels of the TLC5971. We have altered the Rset resistor (680R) so its close to the absolute max, and we use a heat sink on the chip. So far so good, but  I'd like to get roughly twice the brightness out of each channel from the same LEDs. The leds can handle it.

I note that the TLC5971 datasheet says multiple outputs can be wired up in parallel to increase the output current.

My question is, instead of wiring up multiple outputs from the same chip, can I hook up the outputs of 2 different TLC5971's together?

If so, can I also then put two TLC5971's with the same input SCK and DATA lines to make them behave indentically, without changing our firmware?

Kind Regards

  • Hi Slivkoff,Yes, you can tie multiple output in parallel for the same IC.
For the different IC, you can also tie output together. But the problem is tlc5971 use internal osillator inside the IC for PWM, for different IC, the oscillator variation maybe different, that's the only concern, may be not easy for sync unless you use external signage for GSCLK.
For SCK and Data, of coure you can tie togerther.Best regards,Feifei
