bq27010 temperature reporting

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ27010

I am having a problem with the bqJunior gas gauges in that occasionally I get a battery back from the field that is reporting a very high chip temperature (reported die temperature).  The temperature being read by the bq27x10 software is in the vicinity of 275°C (2080 counts of 0.25K).  Another issue, I don't know if it is related, is that the pack reads a very low voltage and charge capacity even after the pack is fully charged and the measured voltage at the output terminals is at the fully charged level.  I see that the registers for the temperature are read-only by the host.  Is there anything that can be causing this problem?

  • Hello George,

    Couple questions here:

-What is the actual "low voltage" you are measuring?
-Can you confirm you are measuring 275C with 2080 counts? The value should be around 250C.
-Does sending a reset fix the measurement?
-Can you provide a log file and a gg file were you are seeing this abnormal measurement?

    Thank you.
  • Good day Fernando,

Specifically regarding the issue with the temperature measurement - I agree that the measurement in counts and the measurement in degrees that I provided may have been somewhat off.  Regarding the actual performance of the chip, I have allowed the pack to relax for several days and now I am encountering an unusual situation.  When I first connect the pack to the bq27x10 HDQ reader, it reads the high temperature I reported earlier.  If I let it sit in the reader for several read cycles, the reported temperature slowly drops to a more normal value.  Removing and replacing the pack on the reader will occasionally cause the temperature to jump up and then slowly recover again.

Question: how do I issue a RESET command to the chip?

  • Hello George,

Please refer to page 13 of the bq27010 of the datasheet regarding the different command bits that can be sent to the gauge. The command bit FRST requests a full reset of the gauge. This bit is located on the Mode register, address 0x01.

Have you verified the connection of VCC (pin2)? Please reference this e2e post that is reporting a similar case to yours.

Can you provide a schematic? I can send you a private message with my email so you can share it over there.

    Thank you.
