BQ40z60 always-on system

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ40Z60

Hello,

Is the BQ40z60 good for an always-on system ? The basic usage would be:

- 0.02C discharge

- 1-2C charge

Without any rest period at the end of charge. The battery (2S LiPo)  will never reach a fully discharged state.

The embedded charger and gauging in the bq40z60 seems really nice, especially the fact that we can tune the charge in many different ways.

So here is my question:

- Is any of the Impedance Track chip a good choice ? I'm afraid that we will never update Qmax since REST and FD flags won't be set, this is especially a problem for cell balancing as it use the estimated cell's capacity.

- If not, which chip does TI recommend  (both gauging/protection and charger) ?

Thanks,

Philippe

  • The bq40z60 does have the FastQMAX feature that will allow QMax updates without the rest period. You can check the TRM for the qualification conditions for an update. The other option would be to use a CEDV device. They do not require rest period either, but they also require a full discharge to update FCC. The problem will be your discharge rate. Both gauging algorithms require at least a C/10 discharge rate for learning.
