TPS51220A / about V5SW pin

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS51220A

Hi,

Could you tell me about V5SW pin terminal processing.
Customer wants to use TPS51220A in System without the 5V power supply.
Which of 1 and 2 can reduce consumption electricity?

1.V5SW→connect to GND
2.V5SW→connect to VREG5

Could you give me your advice?

Best Regards,
Yusuke/Japan Disty

  • I think you have that backwards. VREG5 is an LDO that derives a nominal 5V voltage rail from the input voltage, which may be as high as 32 V. Since 32 to 5 V conversion via LDO is not very efficient, there is a provision to supply the required VREG5 voltage form an external source. SO you have two choices:

V5SW open and VREG 5 is derived from VIN using internal LDO (least efficient)

    or

V5SW connected to eternal 5 V source to supply the VREG5 voltage (most efficient). This supplied voltage may possibly be one of the regulated outputs of the TPS51220A or from another source. If a 5 V source is detected on V5SW after EN1 is high and PGOOD1 is high, then it is automatically switched from the internal LDO to the external source.
